The Quinceañera, or 15th birthday, tradition dates back to the days of the Aztecs and Mayans. The event is a celebration of a young girl’s transition from childhood to womanhood. Eventually, the Spaniards influenced the event and a deeply Catholic connection emerged. The most important part of the celebration is the Thanksgiving Mass, where the birthday girl, accompanied by her parents, godparents, and court of honor, comes dressed in a full-length, fanciful gown. The Mass gives the girl’s priest a chance to talk with her about her responsibilities of her faith and reminds her of her devotion to God. A rededication of her baptismal vows is also performed.Any girl intending to celebrate her Quinceañera will have to contact the Pastor well in advance. She will have to be attending CCD classes 2 years prior to the year of celebration. She will have to attend a special retreat in Corpus Christi, meant only for such candidates. The dates for the retreat can be obtained from the office. She should have received the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and Holy Communion, prior to the Quincenera celebration.
